William (Bill) O. Cappello

William “Bill” O. Cappello, 65, passed away on August 5, 2018, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill was born and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, son of Orlando and Eleanor (Patulo) Cappello. He was educated in the Mount Vernon public schools and later attended Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx. At 20 years old, Bill drove cross country to Los Angeles, California. He stayed for two years, pursuing his life's passion, researching old motion pictures and their actors. He met many notables, including Elwood Ullman, script writer for numerous Three Stooges movies. Bill treasured the scripts given to him by Mr. Ullman. Bill's friend, film historian and author Leonard Maltin wrote in a recent correspondence to Bill, "I've appreciated our friendship and admired your incredible scholarship and sheer detective work over the years. You worked miracles long before the Internet came along." In addition to his work as a film historian, Bill was active in local government. He became a staunch advocate for the citizens of Mount Vernon, investigating issues, attending meetings, and speaking on behalf of the constituents of the city. He was often interviewed by reporters for the Journal News for his opinions on local events. Bill worked for many years for DHL, a provider of international shipping and courier delivery. After his retirement, he maintained a friendship with many of the people he worked with and met while employed there. Bill's family and friends from around the world mourn his passing. He leaves behind his parents, Orlando and Eleanor Cappello of Mount Vernon and many cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Felice Cappello. Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date.
