Virginia Emma Bishop-Pombo, fondly known as Ginny to her family and friends, unexpectedly passed away on September 3, 2025. Born on May 26, 1958, in Mount Vernon, NY to Miller and Kathryn (Goffin) Bishop. At the age of 5, the family moved to Amityville, NY where she lived during her elementary and middle school years. The family returned to Mount Vernon where she graduated high school and was rewarded with a scholarship to Providence College in 1976. Through the loss of her father and a devastating fire at the school’s dormitory in 1977, Ginny was able to overcome these obstacles and continued her studies with a Bachelor of Arts.
After living in Rhode Island for 10 years, Ginny returned to Mount Vernon and embarked on a fulfilling career as a customer service specialist with Verizon. For 25 years, she was the heart and soul of her department, touching the lives of countless individuals with her warmth and dedication. Her colleagues not only found a reliable coworker in Ginny but also a true friend.
Ginny struggled for years with a disability that we would later find out was undiagnosed Multiple Sclerosis. Five days a week, she would latch up her Canadian Crutches and take a 1.5-hour subway ride to and from work. When the MS really took its toll, and she would fall trying to get in and out of the subway, they finally moved her back to Westchester until she was out on disability. She lived in Cortland Healthcare until her untimely death.
Fluent in French, Ginny's love for language and culture was a bridge that connected her to people and places beyond her immediate world. Her humor, generosity, and loving nature were the words that best described her, and her legacy is one of laughter, selflessness, and an unending capacity to give.
A voracious reader and an enthusiast for stories, Ginny found joy and solace in the pages of books. She knew every answer to Jeopardy questions, loved movies, music, and wrestling which provided her endless hours of entertainment and spirited conversations. In later years, she became an avid listener of podcasts, a platform through which she continued to learn and engage with the world. Ginny's passion for whale watching was more than a hobby; it was a spiritual experience that connected her to the majesty of God's creation.
Ginny's faith in Christ was the cornerstone of her existence. Her Christian values shone brightly in every interaction, and she lived her life as a reflection of the love and grace that she believed were gifted to us all. Her words and actions were a source of motivation and comfort, encouraging those around her to embrace life's journey with hope and resilience.
Ginny's life was a testament to the power of faith and the strength of the human spirit. She grew up surrounded by the love of her family, including her devoted son Joseph Pombo, her caring sister Yvette Bishop, and her cherished nephews Michael and Simon Bishop. Although she was predeceased by her brother Elliott Bishop, the bond they shared continued to inspire her throughout her life. Ginny's family circle was completed by her beloved daughter-in-law, Aimee Barbosa Pombo, who stood by her side with unwavering support.
Ginny's life was a beautiful symphony of moments that echoed the essence of her spirit—love in action. As we celebrate her life, we are reminded of her infectious smile that could light up the darkest room and her laughter that was a balm to weary souls. Ginny's journey on earth may have concluded, but her story continues in the hearts of those who loved her.
We rejoice in the knowledge that Ginny is now free from the constraints of her earthly body and is basking in the glory of eternal life. Her life was a beautiful reflection of the scripture, "Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord." Ginny's memory will forever be cherished, and her spirit will continue to inspire us to live with love, courage, and laughter.
