Ronald Anthony Johns, known affectionately to friends and family as Ron, RJ, or Ronnie Fleetwood, passed away on October 24, 2024, at the age of 63. Born on October 5, 1961, in Mount Vernon, New York, he was a lifelong resident and a well-known figure in the community.
Ronald was the son of the late Richard Johns, Sr., and Grace Ann Johns. He was a loving father to his son, Ryan, and his wife, Jenny. Ronald's legacy of kindness and humor lives on through his beloved granddaughter, Jordyn Grace, who was the apple of his eye.
He is survived by his brothers, Richard Johns, Jr. (Donna) and Raymond Johns, and his sister, JodiLynn Tavano, (Vinny, predeceased.) His half-brother, Christian Johns (Kelly), also survives him. Ronald's memory will be forever treasured by his nephews, Darren Johns and Vincent Tavano, and his nieces Marisa Johns, Tara Johns, Casey and Devin Johns, as well as many cousins and friends. He will also be greatly missed by AnneMarie and Leigh, who he shared many fond years with.
Ronald’s developed many lifelong friendships along his travels. He dedicated over three decades of service to the Mount Vernon Board of Education as a janitor, a role in which he took great pride in.
Beyond his work, Ronald's passions were simple and heartfelt. He was a fixture at Mazzy's, where he reveled in games of darts and pool, always surrounded by friends and a good time. A day would not go by that you would not see him walking into a store, standing outside Gramatan Avenue or just walking through the town. Any which way you turned, there would be someone yelling "Hey RJ!"
Ronald's greatest joy, however, was his family, especially his granddaughter, Jordyn. In his spare time, you would often find him spending time with her, cheering her on whether it was her playing soccer on Saturdays mornings or simply going to the park.
Those who knew Ronald will remember him for his smile and famous one-liners from his favorite movies or TV shows. He loved his classic rock and never missed an opportunity to play one of his favorite songs. A true New York sports enthusiast, Ronald never missed a chance to root for his beloved Yankees, Giants, and Islanders. He was also a huge fan of wrestling, often watching matches with Ryan.
Ronald's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him. Ronald's spirit will continue to inspire us, reminding us to cherish every moment with our loved ones, to find humor in the everyday, and to be a friend to all.
As we say goodbye to RJ, we hold tight to the memories he gave us, the lessons he taught us, and the love he shared with us. Though he may be gone from our sight, his light will continue to shine in the lives of those he touched.
His family finds comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved parents and brother-in-law, resting peacefully after a life that brought so much joy to others. As we reflect on his journey, we are grateful for every moment we shared with Ronald, a man who was truly one of a kind.
