Obituary

In Loving Memory of Piero Truini

On August 21, 1930, Piero Truini was born on a farm in the town of Ripi, Frosinone, Italy to his late parents Enrico and Assunta Truini. The family moved to the United States in 1962 to the Bronx, NY and finally to Mount Vernon, NY in 1994 where Piero's journey came to a peaceful close at home on August 18, 2023 surrounded by his wife and family, leaving behind a legacy that will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In April 1947 Piero married his soul mate, Nella Recine, who was born September 8, 1931 across the dirt road that separated them during their childhood years.  Nella gave birth to their first daughter at age 17, and then a second daughter at age 21. Piero was drafted to the Italian Army, and once he fulfilled his duty as a chef, he was home in Italy for a few more years. Afterwards, he went to the U.S. with his father for work to support his family back home. He traveled back and forth to Italy to spend time with his family. At the time Piero’s grandmother was still living and they did not want to leave her in Italy without family. Upon her death in 1962, Piero arranged for his family to come join him in the U.S., including both sets of their parents. Piero started a full-time landscaping business in New York until his retirement in 1993. Once retired he and Nella spent their winters residing in Port Charlotte, FL where Piero enjoyed biking around the neighborhood and visiting his local friends until they moved back to Mount Vernon fulltime in 2014. In his later years he and Nella enjoyed spending time with family and traveling. Piero was passionate about his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to have them help him make his homemade wine, cured meats and tend to his garden.

Piero is survived by his devoted wife, Nella, his two children: Velia (Ralph) of Mount Vernon, NY, Iolanda (Christopher) of Yorktown Heights, NY. He leaves four grandchildren, Ralph (Melissa), Jennifer (Thomas), Stefania (Kwame), Kristina (Jim) as well as eleven great-grandchildren, Christopher, Mia, Sierra, Vincent, Matteo, Brielle, Sofia, Katelyn, Jamie, Kayla and Jaxon. 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a 76 year marriage and 93 years
of life…Nonno, thank you for everything.

Nonna Nella and Nonno Piero Truini. Piero was born on August 21, 1930 on a farm in a small town in Italy called Ripi, Frosinone. Nella was born on September 8th, 1931 on a farm across the dirt road that separated them.  They grew up doing “normal“ activities, feeding the cows, taking care of horses, walking to school together.  Nella taught Piero how to tie his shoes, and many other facets and responsibilities of growing up, they did together. By the time they were teenagers, they were in love; however, because Piero’s father was in the United States, Nella’s father did not want them to be together. He thought Piero would take Nella to the States, and even though he knew and liked Piero his whole life, he did not want to lose his daughter. Before an arranged marriage could take place between Nella and another local man, she and Piero eloped in the middle of the night. They were very frightened of her father… They went to Nella’s aunt’s house in Velletri, Roma, and stayed there overnight. The following day, Nella’s father came there upset, but Nella’s aunt protected them. They were prepared to get married, but since they were both minors (only 16), they needed a parent's written permission. Piero's father did not want to give his consent; he wanted his son to come to the U.S. and have more opportunities. However, Nella's father ended up writing him and told him he had no choice. Piero and Nella were officially married in April 1947.  Nella gave birth to their first child at age 17, and then a second at age 21. Piero was drafted to the Italian Army, and once he fulfilled his duty he was home for a couple of years. Afterwards, he went to the U.S. with his father, but he traveled back and forth to Italy to spend time with his family. Because Piero’s grandmother was still living, they did not want to leave her in Italy. Upon her death in 1962, Piero had his wife and daughters join him in the U.S., including both sets of their parents. Piero and Nella have been best friends for 92 years and married for 76 years. They have four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
