Peter D. Costa Jr. of Tuckahoe, a devoted husband, loving father, and dedicated public servant, passed away on August 11, 2025. He was born on March 17, 1957, in Mount Vernon, New York, to Peter and Jane Costa. Peter attended the public schools in Mount Vernon.
Peter began his long and impactful career in public service in 1975 with the Mount Vernon Police Department’s Community Relations/Youth Bureau, where he worked on issues related to gang and school violence and helped create greater recreational opportunities for the city’s youth. He later worked at the Westchester County Medical Center in the Distribution Department and the Westchester County Department of Public Works Audit Control Department. He has also worked in the private sector as a production control supervisor for Xerox Corporation and as a printing foreman for Academy Reproductions.
He returned to the Westchester County Department of Public Works in 1994 as a printer. In 2004, Peter joined the Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities, where he served until his retirement in 2020. As the County’s Transfer Station Manager, he oversaw the operation of all transfer stations and the Material Recovery Facility. He also managed successful community recycling and educational programs, including Household Recycling Day events, the Mobile Shredder, and the Veggie Van. Peter played a pivotal role in coordinating the County’s Annual Earth Day Celebration, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Peter’s leadership extended to his role as Environmental Program Coordinator for the County, where he helped institute the County’s E-waste recycling program and New York State’s first Medication Take-Back program. In 2010, while in this role, Peter was recognized by the Westchester County Association of Municipal Public Works Administrators and named “Person of the Year.”
Peter gave his time generously to the community of Tuckahoe, serving as Village Trustee, Commissioner, and Board President of the Tuckahoe Housing Authority, as well as participating on the Special Education and Budget committees of the Tuckahoe School District. Following his County retirement, he was employed by the City of Yonkers, where he took pride in mentoring the young men and women he worked with in managing the JFK Marina operations.
Peter’s life was one of service, compassion, and dedication. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their two sons, Peter and Ryan, who will remember him for his unwavering love, steady guidance, and deep sense of responsibility to both family and community. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the community he helped strengthen.
