On Wednesday, February 15th, Mary E. Bradix, a beloved human being and loving spouse and family member, passed away at 77 years of age. Born to Nettie Mae and Thomas Kinsey, Sr., she had eight siblings, Thomas Kinsey Jr, deceased, Ronnie Kinsey, deceased, Jerome Kinsey, deceased, plus triplets and a daughter, all who died during and after childbirth a short time after birth. Mary is survived by Leon L. Bradix Jr., her spouse, Akinyele (Kenya) Bradix, son, Thandi S. Bradix, daughter, Doris Day (Flip) Jefferson, sister. Her family includes many cousins, nieces, and nephews whose relationship with Mary is infinite and endearing. Throughout her life, Mary exhibited tremendous devotion to her children, her spouse and a love for her pets. After graduating from JT Barber High School, she met a young US Marine, and created a lifelong relationship for the next 60 years. Mary continued her career as a great human being by graduating from Cornell University’s School of Nursing, certifying her skills as a professional nurse and home healthcare nurse for over 50 years at New York Presbyterian and in private duty. Mary’s personal interest included community activities, helping those who were needy and underprivileged, providing helpful guidance and structure to those who solicited her thoughtfulness. Other interests included writing short stories, children’s stories, and poetry in her spare time. She described her writing efforts as how to deal with life and the beauty of nature and humanity. These efforts resulted in her poetry being recognized and published in the National Library of Poetry’s annual contests in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Additionally, Essence Magazine recognized her talents with an honorarium symbolizing her capabilities between 1994-1995.
