Margarita Leontyne Thomas Godwin was born on July 3, 1921 in Harlem in her mother’s Marcella Thomas apartment. After her marriage to Raymond Godwin they relocated to Mount Vernon, New York. From this union life began for Lorraine & Richie. As a Mount Vernon resident she joined Sacred Heart Church. Both of her children were baptized in the church and attended Sacred Heart School. Margarita wore many hats and was affectionately known by many names. To many she was Rita, Grandma, Godmother, Aunt, Auntie. Mom was an only child who unfortunately was limited to what she could experience during her early years due to her health issues. But at an early age always enjoyed singing. She was always ready to entertain guests visiting for Sunday dinner. Due to her love of children, she started a Girl Scout troop in Sacred Heart School. As much as she did not like camping, and outdoor life, she put on a happy face and took her troop on many camping trips. A lady who despises dirt, especially mud, insects and unkempt areas. But, she took us and in her hands to make everything as clean as possible, she traveled with Lysol spray. Mom’s loving heart, she opened our home to 3 children, Jose, James & Margaret. They also started their education in Sacred Heart School. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Choir, the Wartburg One Heart, One Voice choral group, was a member of the Mount Vernon Community Theatre. One of her greatest joys was joining The Carr-Hill Singers presenting concerts locally, Washington, DC, Martha’s Vineyard and Vienna Austria. Richie and Margaret are not here to say it so, speaking for all of us, THANK YOU MOM for all that you gave us. Thank you for your love, all of your encouraging words, for all of your sacrifices and for all that you provided for our happiness and growth.
