Scripture
“The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.”
— Psalm 37:29
Mercella Graham, née Mercelle May Angela Elliott, was born on June 18, 1934, in Spanish
Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Magzie Whitely Elliott and Cyril Elliott. At a young age,
Mercella experienced the loss of her father, Cyril, who left behind Mercella and her two younger
brothers, George and Jubal Elliott.
Following this loss, Mercella and her brothers went to live with their paternal aunt and uncle in
Belfield, Manchester, Jamaica. Her mother later remarried and welcomed Mercella’s younger
sister, Hortense, affectionately known as “Tenny,” further expanding the family she cherished
deeply.
While in Belfield, Mercella grew into a remarkable young woman and eventually met Nathan,
who would become her beloved husband and lifelong partner. They subsequently moved to
Mandeville to raise their children.
Known for her kindness, strength, and devotion to her family, Mercella carried herself with
dignity, grace, and a quiet determination that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Mercella was also known for her lifelong sense of fashion and style, always dressing elegantly
and accessorizing with beautiful hats, scarves, and carefully chosen adornments. It was no
surprise that, as a young woman, she worked briefly as a seamstress in Karam’s Department
Store in Mandeville, Jamaica. Her passion for fashion and design extended beyond work, and she
frequently sourced and cut her own fabrics, using her sewing machine to create garments for
herself and others, including her young daughters.
However, Mercella had bigger dreams for herself and her family and in 1966, at the age of 32,
she immigrated to the United States to pursue a better life and begin planting new roots. Nathan
followed shortly after in 1967, and by early 1969, their four children had joined them. By that
time, Mercella and Nathan had purchased their home in Mount Vernon, New York, where they
lovingly raised their children and later nurtured their grandchildren for decades to follow.
Together, Mercella and Nathan worked as a team to ensure their children were never in need and
received the best education possible – one of the primary motivations for their journey to the
United States. With the support of her husband, Mercella worked tirelessly to provide for her
family, serving as a private duty nurse by day and as a nursing assistant by night, first at
Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla and then at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. She retired in 1996
to devote herself fully to her lifelong passion of serving Jehovah as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
It brought her great pride and joy to share her knowledge of, and love for, Jehovah with her
beloved grandchildren, often bringing them along with her to meetings and conducting bible
studies with them after school.
Mercella passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026. In a profound reflection of their deep bond,
her beloved sister, Tenny, passed the very next day, on March 22, 2026.
She is survived by her children, Neville (Margie), Velene “Carol,” Juilet “Dawn,” and Michael;
her grandchildren, Stacey, Michael Christopher, Kojo “Joey,” Ayesha, Devon, Nikkita, Aliyah,
and Marcus; her great-grandchildren, Eric, Ty’Asia, Terrell, Naima, and Hendrix; and a host of
cherished nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her beloved
husband, Nathan, as well as her brothers, George and Jubal Elliott.
Mercella will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, resilience,
strength, and devotion to family will live on in our hearts forever.
A service to celebrate Mercella’s life will be held at Yannantuono Burr Davis Sharpe Funeral
Home, located at 584 Gramatan Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10552, on Saturday, April 4, 2026,
beginning at 9:30 AM.
Viewing will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, with funeral services immediately following
at 10:30 AM.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
