Louis Philip Caragine, M.D., 86, passed away peacefully at home on February 15, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family.
Upon graduation from Mount Saint Michael High School, Iona College (now University) with distinction, and Georgetown University Medical School, Dr. Caragine practiced internal medicine for 57 years. Following his internship, he served as a Senior Medical Officer in the United States Navy at the SeaBee base in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Lieutenant Caragine then earned appointments at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Mount Vernon Hospital, Lawrence Hospital, and New York Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital.
Although Louis retired from his practice at age 82, he maintained his board certifications and actively studied to stay abreast of new technologies. Keenly aware and an astute observer of people, he was an excellent diagnostician and more importantly a kind friend to his patients and family. Quite simply, he loved helping people through medicine and thrived through his relentless work ethic. Moreover, Louis was humble and lived with an unwavering moral compass such that he chaired the Medical Ethics Committee at Lawrence Hospital among other positions. Forever a Gael, he was also honored for distinguished service to Iona University.
Louis instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of learning, service, and exploring our beautiful country and the world. He was their Poppy and biggest fan, never missing a performance, sports game, graduation, ceremony, birthday, or anniversary if he could travel. In fact, his hobby was spending time and enjoying parties with his family. Although reserved, his presence was reassuring and will be sorely missed. Louis was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Margaret Caragine; his loving wife, Carol; his son, Frank, and daughter, Margaret (Cavalluzzi Caragine). He is survived by his children Louis (Robyn) Caragine, Theresa Caragine and her husband Thomas Voutsas, and Maria (Chris) Thompson; his grandchildren Crystal, Cassandra, Nico, Carl, Matthew, Annie, Joseph, Massimo, and Dante; and his brothers Philip, Frank, and Anthony.
