Judith Ann Johnson had a wonderful life.
Although she battled Multiple Sclerosis for the past 17 years, she maintained a positive outlook because her happiness was built on a foundation composed of faith, family, and friends.
She was born in the Bronx on September 9, 1942 to Robert and Edna Green; the youngest of four siblings, including Carl, Shirley, and Barbara. Judy was raised in Flushing and attended Queens College earning a B.A. and an M.A. in education, later becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, working in public schools in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Judy was lucky in love. She and Edward, her devoted husband of 53 years, shared a passion for music, theater, fine dining, traveling the world and sailing the seas, watching Penn State football, creating good times with family and cherished friends. After going to an early Mass at her church Nativity of Our Blessed Lady, Judy would go to The First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon to sing in the choir.
She enjoyed spending time with her sisters-in-law and was unabashedly adored by all her nieces and nephews from the Green, Rumsey, and Ilaw families.
A wonderful cook, Judy was renowned for her world-class macaroni and cheese, mushroom rice casserole, bread pudding, her mother-in-law’s sweet potato pie and cold oven cake. Christmas was not complete without Judy’s fruit cake and cookies!! At family gatherings, young relatives would squirrel away portions of the goodies in her refrigerator to take home, hoping that their cousins wouldn't snatch them up.
Judy was predeceased by her parents Edna and Robert Green, brother Carl Greene, sisters Barbara Rumsey and Shirley Ilaw and nephew Gregory Ilaw. She leaves to treasure her memories: husband Edward; nieces CeCe and Marianne; nephews Carl “Buddy,” Gerry (Talitha), Raoul Daryl (Leslie) and Dion (Ivy); great-nephew Victor; great-nieces Christina (Neal), Alexandra, Lindsay, Kaitlin (Colton), Deborah, Morgan (Michael), Evelyn, Kyli and Elizah; great-grandnephew Clark; sisters-in-laws LaVerne and Karen. She had a host of friends as far back as high school to new ones as recent as a year ago. That’s our Judy, she will be missed.
Judy would not want us to be sad. She'd say, "See ya soon or toodles!" and suggest that we honor her memory by listening to a little Johnny Mathis or Earth, Wind and Fire; pouring a glass of Kendall Jackson wine, and…
Embracing the motto of Ellen DeGeneres: "Be kind to one another."
