Carole was born on March 14, 1943, in Mount Vernon, NY to Rose (Moccio) and Hugo
Carrozza. She was raised in Mount Vernon surrounded by cousins and extended family.
Carole graduated from AB Davis High School in 1959, two years early, at the age of 16,
and followed her cousin Elaine to Plattsburgh. Carole finished her education at NYU,
while working and raising her daughter, Jennifer (Church) Lindop. Carole began her
teaching career in the City of Mount Vernon School District, where she continued to
foster her love of all things creative, for 31 years. While teaching at Washington School,
she met James Fair and then came their daughter, Jamie.
Carole’s students meant everything to her, and she was happy to continue her teaching
career at Grimes School and later to take part in the first ever city-wide magnet program
at Pennington-Grimes Elementary School. At Pennington-Grimes, Carole was the
beloved art teacher of grades K-6. She never touched a student’s artwork, and always
reminded the children that there are no mistakes in art.
Carole was the proud grandmother of Sara (Chris), Robin, Aaron (Natalie), Neil, and
Elliot. And as if the title grandmother wasn’t enough, she was also the great-
grandmother to Lianna, Aliza, Johnny, Rosie, Theo and River. Nothing gave her more joy
than to talk about her family and the joy they brought to her life. Everyone loved
spending time with Grandma Carole.
Carole was pre-deceased by her sisters Marguerite Carrozza and Rosanne Devino, as
well as her parents Rose and Hugo. Carole enjoyed spending time with her beloved
family in Florida - her parents, her sister Rosanne (George), and her nephew and nieces
George, Shelly and Jill and their children - everyone loved Aunt Carole. Carole’s
happiest times were spent around the table enjoying homemade food from Nanny and
Poppa, surrounded by family. In her later years, Carole enjoyed making and giving
away her beautiful handmade cards, going out to lunch with her cousins, high school,
and teacher friends, and re-connecting with her students on Facebook. Carole was
known for always leaving a loving comment or encouraging word to anyone who
crossed her path. Even in death, her impact and love can be felt all around in the words
and memories of those she loved, and who in return, loved her too.
While our hearts are broken because we cannot physically hold her hand or be on the
receiving end of her warm embrace and kisses, we are grateful for all that she has given
us while we were blessed to have her with us for 80 years. There is never enough time
with the ones we love, but Carole gave love with every ounce of her being, and there
was never any doubt to how much she cared for you.
Carole left this world on August 5, 2023, surrounded by her loving daughters, Jennifer
and Jamie, and her son in law Francis Lindop. Till the very end, she held their hands
tight, enveloped in gratitude and love. While our hearts are broken, we know that we
are nothing without our mother’s love, and she gave so much that she will live on for
generations to come.
