Anthony 'Butch' Costello

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anthony “Butch” Costello on April 22, 2025. He was born on April 23, 1949 to Dominic Costello of East Harlem and Rose Costello (nee DeMilio) of Mount Vernon. Butch enjoyed a wonderful childhood on the south side of Mount Vernon. As a teen, he spent his time boating with his parents. In 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ruth Wilhelm. They were married for 37 years and had two children, Lori and Tommy. The very mention of Lori and her singing would bring an instant smile to his face, and his strong bond with Tommy would be the envy of any father and son. Butch was a Tool and Die maker by trade, and later on in life became a Machine Shop teacher in the Vocational Department at Mount Vernon High School. Throughout the years, he enjoyed coaching Little League baseball, hunting, riding ATVs and shooting guns at his country home in the Catskills. When he was not entertaining loved ones, he spent endless hours in his workshop/garage filled with tools, where you would be hard pressed to find something that he could not fix. Butch’s pride and joy were his 2 grandchildren, Julia Rose and Thomas Anthony, to whom he was known as “Poppy”. He could always make Julia giggle and smile from when she was a baby, and he loved to sit and chat with Tommy about baseball, cars, and girls. Butch’s ability to be the life of the party and his fun loving personality will forever carry on in the hearts of all that knew and loved him. In addition to the many family members, friends and coworkers, he leaves behind his children, Lori (Al), Tommy (Dawn), sister, Mary Linda (Thomas), and several nieces and a nephew.

Family will honor Butch’s  life from 1:00 - 6:00 pm on Sunday April 27, 2025 at Yannantuono Funeral Home.  
A private service will be held at a later date.
