Dr. Andrew J. Cordaro, Jr., "the Captain," 78, of Mount Vernon, NY, passed away on November 4, 2022 surrounded by loved ones at New York Presbyterian Westchester Hospital.
Andy was born on October 9, 1944 to Catherine and Andrew J. Cordaro, Sr. in the Bronx, NY. After graduating from Mount St. Michael High School, he went on to study at Fordham University.
While at Fordham, he played football and rugby, leading his teams both as a player and coach. Even after graduation, he tirelessly supported the teams in the stands and as an integral member of the Gridiron Club. For over 20 years, he ran their golf outings where everyone looked forward to Andy taking over the mic as emcee to give away the always interesting array of gifts and prizes.
After Fordham, Andy went on to medical school at Università di Bologna in Italy. In addition to studying medicine esclusivamente in Italiano, he traveled the country playing for the Viro Bologna rugby team.
Back in the states, he completed his residency at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan. It was here that he met his wife, Susan, a nurse in the operating room at the time. They wed in 1973, going on to have 2 children, Justin and Andrea, and then 2 grandchildren, Anthony and Amelia.
More recently, Andy spent much of his time supporting Sts. Peter and Paul Church, utilizing his expertise in running golf outings and innovative fundraisers to run church golf outings and events like “Honeymooners’ Night," complete with accompanying trivia and prizes.
If he could have his way, Andy would spend any chance he could down in the Florida Keys casting his fishing line off the dock with Susan by his side, watching the sun set.
Andy was predeceased by his mother and father, Andrew and Catherine Cordaro, his sister Barbara Clark; and brothers-in-law Ronald Tavaska and James Callahan. He is survived by his wife Susan; his son, Justin and husband Paul Hagen; daughter Andrea and husband Justin Trumbull and their children, Anthony and Amelia; and sister Jeannette Tavaska.
