Efrain Lopez spent Father's Day, June 16th, joyfully surrounded by his children. In the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, June 19, 2019 he peacefully passed away in his sleep at the age of 95.
Born June 29, 1923, in Ponce, Puerto Rico he worked as a Bicycle Repair Technician in his late teens. In his early twenties, he was trained as diamond cutter and was recruited by a firm in New York's Diamond's District. He courageously left behind his beloved island and started a new life in the Big City where he later married and raised a family.
His kids remember a childhood full of exploration and adventure. A very active man, he took his kids to see a broader piece of the world with trips to Albany and Washington, D.C. There were frequent outings to Coney Island, the Palisades, and fun days spent at Jones Beach. His grandkids remember boxes of pastries on Saturdays.
Our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was a man of dignity. He was a well-dressed man who favored suits, walked tall, and loved his work. He retired at the impressive age of 85, having spent 65 years as a Master Diamond Cutter.
He is survived by 10 of his 11 children plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a brilliant legacy of courage, dignity, and family.
